Domestic Flight Check
Bhutan's domestic flight market is small — most travelers fly into Paro, then drive. Druk Air operates seasonal Paro–Bumthang (Bathpalathang) on ATR turboprops. There's also a brief history of Paro–Yongphula (Trashigang) but it has been suspended. This tool shows when the domestic flight is worth considering vs the 8-hour Paro–Bumthang drive.
Should you fly?
What this solves
Most "Bhutan itinerary" guides bury domestic flight information or recommend it without checking whether it's actually running. Paro–Bumthang operates only certain months and weather cancellations are common. This tool helps you decide drive vs fly based on time, money, and experience.
How to read the result
- Drive takes ~8 hours via Wangdue–Trongsa, scenic but winding.
- Fly takes ~35 minutes Paro → Bumthang on a Druk Air ATR turboprop, but operates seasonally.
- Suspended routes: Paro–Yongphula has been suspended since 2020 (Trashigang access by road only).
Limitations
- Schedules are not published far in advance. Operators sometimes book the entire plane for groups.
- Bathpalathang airport is small and weather-dependent. Monsoon cancellations are common.
- This tool does not know real-time seat availability.
FAQ
Is there a body height / weight limit?
No formal limit. The ATR 42 has normal cabin dimensions; tall travelers (>190 cm) may find knee room tight on the 35-min sector. Paro's approach is technical but doesn't require passenger fitness certification.
How much does a domestic flight cost?
Around USD 110–160 one-way. Often bundled into operator packages. Operators sometimes charter the whole plane for groups of 8+.
