Restaurant Bill Decoder
Bhutanese restaurant bills are simpler than Western ones — but they have their own quirks. No service charge standard; sales tax usually included; tipping informal. This tool decodes what each line on your bill means.
Decode your bill
What each line means
Subtotal
Sum of menu items before any extras. Always the starting point.
Service charge
Optional / rare in Bhutan. When shown (upscale), 5–10%. Not a tip.
Sales tax / VAT
Usually already included in the menu price. If shown separately, it's 5%. Some hotels charge a tourism levy.
Card surcharge
3–5% on credit cards. Often waived for bills over Nu 5,000.
Tipping
Not on the bill. Cash only. See Tipping Guide.
What this solves
Western travelers expect service charge + tax + tip = 25–30% extra. Bhutan is closer to the menu price, with maybe 3% card surcharge. This avoids sticker shock.
How to read the result
The decoded total tells you what's actually expected to pay. Tips are added separately in cash.
Limitations
- Some restaurants don't itemize clearly. Ask before paying.
- Hotel restaurants often add a "tourism levy" not always shown upfront.
