Bhutan Road Matrix
Bhutan has ~6,500 km of roads, mostly single-lane, switchback-laden, and prone to landslide delay. The East–West Highway is the country's spine. Pick a city pair, see the distance, drive time, and what pass you'll cross.

What this solves
Operators quote daily driving distances that hide the reality of switchbacks. Thimphu → Bumthang is "280 km" but takes 8–9 hours. This page gives you real drive times, not optimistic ones.
How to read the table
Each cell shows distance in km. Drive time is roughly distance ÷ 35 km/h on average (Bhutan's typical winding road average). Highland passes add 30–60 min each.
Limitations
- Landslides in monsoon (Jun–Aug) can add 2–6 hours to any route. Multiple slides possible.
- Winter snow can close Pele La, Chele La, and Yongphula pass (Dec–Feb).
- This tool does not know real-time road closures.
FAQ
How long is the Paro to Bumthang drive?
Via Wangdue–Trongsa, it's 280 km / 8–9 hours. Via Gangtey, it stretches to 12 hours but is the scenic route.
Are roads sealed?
Most primary routes are sealed, but expect potholes, gravel patches, and one-lane bridges with traffic-light priority. Straddle with confidence; do not tailgate.
