Bhutan SDF Calculator

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a per-person-per-day charge that funds Bhutan's free healthcare, education, and carbon-negative programs. It is separate from the daily tariff — many travelers confuse the two. This calculator breaks down both, day-by-day, with the children rules.

What this solves

Most "Bhutan trip cost" pages quote a single number — "$250/day" — and leave travelers confused when they see two line items on the invoice. The Department of Tourism's Sustainable Development Fee (Nu 1,200/day for adults, half-rate for children 6–11, free under 6) is paid into a government fund. The "daily tariff" is what your tour operator charges and includes accommodation, meals, transport, guide, and driver. They're billed separately. This tool keeps them separate.

FAQ

Is there an SDF waiver for repeat visitors or regional tourists?

No. Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian passport holders are exempt from both SDF and the daily tariff under the 2022 rules. Everyone else pays both.

Can I pay SDF in Indian Rupees?

Practically, the operator collects it and prefers USD or Nu. INR is legal tender at par in shops, but most operators price and bill in USD for the SDF line.

How do I pay if I book my own trip?

After the 2022 reform, self-arranged travel is restricted. You can use Bhutan's only "self-arranged" pilot for select regions, but most travelers must go through a licensed tour operator who handles the SDF.
